Best Microsoft Recall Alternatives in 2026

Recall needs a Copilot+ PC, runs only on Windows 11, and records no audio at all. Seven alternatives compared on the hardware they need, whether they hear meetings, where the processing happens, and what they cost.

Why people look for a Microsoft Recall alternative

The first wall is hardware. Recall is not a Windows 11 feature so much as a Copilot+ PC feature: Microsoft's own management documentation lists a Secured-core Copilot+ PC, a 40-TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, 8 logical processors, 256 GB of storage with 50 GB free, BitLocker or Device Encryption switched on, and Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security with a biometric enrolled. A perfectly good 2022 laptop fails that list on the first line, and there is no Mac version at all. Most people searching for an alternative are not unhappy with Recall — they simply cannot run it.

The second wall is audio. Recall saves periodic screenshots and reads the text in them; the same Microsoft page states plainly that "Recall doesn't record audio or save continuous video." There is no setting that adds a transcript. If the thing you keep failing to remember is what someone said on a call, Recall was never going to cover it, no matter what hardware you buy. That is the single biggest reason people who switch end up with a different shape of tool rather than a Recall clone.

The third is trust, and it cuts both ways. Recall's 2024 launch drew serious criticism for opt-out-by-default snapshotting, and Microsoft pulled it, rebuilt it as opt-in behind Windows Hello with keys held in a VBS enclave, and relaunched in 2025 — a genuine redesign that deserves credit. What lingers is everything around it: hands-on testing at Tom's Hardware, retested by The Register in August 2025, found the sensitive-information filter still saving card and Social Security numbers; Signal, Brave, and AdGuard block Recall from capturing their windows; and on managed commercial and education devices Microsoft removes it by default until IT allows it. Plenty of people never get to make the choice themselves.

How to judge a Recall replacement

Four questions decide this, and Recall answers three of them in ways that send people looking.

Q1

Does it run on the hardware you already own?

This is the question that disqualifies Recall for most people, so check it first. Recall requires a Copilot+ PC with a 40-TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, and Windows 11 24H2 or later. Everything else on this list runs on ordinary Mac or Windows machines, and some on Linux. If a tool asks for a specific chip, the real price is a new computer.

Q2

Does it hear meetings, or only see the screen?

Recall records no audio by its own documentation, and a screenshot of a video call is not a transcript — speaker names, off-screen voices, and the sentence you needed while sharing a deck never become searchable. Look honestly at what you last went looking for. If it was a spoken decision, a screenshots-only tool replaces the wrong half.

Q3

Where does the capture get processed?

Your screen is the most sensitive stream you produce. Recall gets this right — snapshots are analyzed and stored on the device — and several tools marketed as alternatives do not: Codex Chronicle sends screenshots to OpenAI's servers for processing. The falsifiable test works on any of them: disconnect from the network and see whether capture and search still work.

Q4

Can your AI tools reach it?

Recall's memory is a closed loop — you search it, and Click to Do lets you copy text or pull an image out of a snapshot. In 2026 the more useful question is whether Claude, Cursor, or Codex can pull that context themselves instead of you re-pasting it. A memory your tools can read stops being an app you visit.

LUCI answers the two questions that send people away from Recall. It runs on any modern Mac or Windows machine — it will use an NPU or GPU when one is there, and works without one — so there is no Copilot+ entry ticket. And it captures meetings as well as your screen, without sending a bot into the call, so "what did they push back on?" has an answer instead of a screenshot of a gallery view. Reading and understanding happen on your device, so search still works with Wi-Fi off, and cards, keys, and passwords are blacked out before anything is saved.

Two things it does that a screen-history feature does not attempt. Your agent distills your day into your Life folder, a written record of what you actually worked on rather than a wall of thumbnails. And your memory is reachable through the Agent Bridge — Claude, Cursor, and Codex can recall it, and LUCI connects itself, with nothing to set up. The honest trade-offs against Recall: it is a separate app rather than an OS feature, it captures the sessions you start rather than snapshotting everything all day, and it is closed-source, so you cannot audit it the way you can read OpenRecall.

OpenRecall is the most literal answer to "Recall, but on my hardware": a Python app that takes periodic screenshots, reads the text in them locally, and makes them searchable, released under AGPL-3.0 and running on Windows, Mac, and Linux with no NPU requirement. Because you can read every line of it, it is the strongest option here if auditability rather than convenience is what you are after — and it is the only free option that covers Linux.

The cost is assembly and upkeep. It installs through pip, and the on-device machine-learning dependencies are the most brittle corner of the Python ecosystem — the torch and torchvision conflicts are a common enough failure that we wrote up the workarounds. It matches Recall's scope rather than exceeding it: screenshots and text search, no audio, no memory that accumulates across weeks, and nothing your AI tools can query. And as of September 2026 the repository's last code push was September 24, 2025, so check its recent activity before you commit a year of history to it.

Actively developed, source-available; you run and maintain the stack yourself

Screenpipe is the closest thing to Recall's always-on philosophy that runs cross-platform: continuous local screen recording with text extraction and search, source-available, scriptable, and genuinely available on Linux as well as Mac and Windows. It also captures audio, which Recall does not, and it needs no particular chip. For a developer who wants raw material to build on, that combination is the point.

It is a capture and search pipeline rather than an assistant — you can find a string you remember, but you write the layer that answers questions. Pricing changed: the old $400 lifetime licence is no longer sold to new customers, and as of September 2026 the published plans are a limited free tier, $21 per month, and $42 per seat per month for teams, with the higher tiers adding cloud AI and sync. Continuous capture of everything also carries the battery and accidental-capture costs that made Recall controversial in the first place.

Research preview announced April 20, 2026 — features and availability may change

Chronicle is the most interesting design on this list. Announced on April 20, 2026 as an opt-in research preview, it captures your screen in the background, sends selected frames to OpenAI to be turned into structured memories, and writes the results back to your Mac as markdown files you can read and edit. Raw captures older than six hours are deleted while it is running. The goal is narrow and well chosen: give Codex durable context about your stack and conventions so you stop re-explaining them.

It inverts the one thing Recall gets right. The screenshots leave your machine, and the memories land on disk as unencrypted markdown. It is also the most boxed-in option here — macOS only, ChatGPT Pro only, and at launch unavailable in the EU, the UK, and Switzerland. Because the extraction is deliberately lossy, there is no raw record underneath to drill back into, which is the opposite of what people want from screen history.

Remio covers a much wider surface than Recall: a browser extension that saves pages as you read them, local file indexing across dozens of formats, meeting recording and transcription, and connectors into tools like Drive, Microsoft 365, Slack, and GitHub. It states that core data, search, indexing, recording, and transcription stay on your device, and it runs on ordinary Windows and Apple silicon hardware.

The nuance to check for yourself is the split. Remio describes a hybrid setup where storage and indexing are local but its AI answers can use cloud models unless you supply your own key or point it at a local one — so "local-first" and "local-only" are not the same claim here. It also is not a screen timeline: if what you liked about Recall was scrolling back through what was on screen at 3pm, this is a different shape of product.

If your honest reason for leaving Recall is that it could not hear your calls, a notetaker is a better answer than another screen recorder. Meetily is MIT-licensed, joins nothing — no bot in the call — transcribes locally with Whisper models, and works with Meet, Zoom, Teams, and anything else that makes sound. The community edition is free and uncapped, and Pro is $10 per user per month billed annually for speaker identification and better exports.

It is the exact complement to Recall rather than a replacement: it captures no screen at all. Notes are per meeting rather than a memory that accumulates across weeks, summaries expect you to bring Ollama or your own API key, and there is nothing for your coding agents to query. Running Recall and Meetily side by side is a defensible setup if you have the qualifying hardware.

Discontinued — the Mac app stopped capturing screen and audio on December 19, 2025, after Meta acquired parent company Limitless, announced December 5, 2025 (verified 2026-09-06, source: 9to5Mac)

Rewind defined this category on the Mac years before Recall existed: continuous local screen capture, text search, audio, and a scrollable timeline of your own work. It is the product most "Recall alternative for Mac" searches are unknowingly looking for.

It is gone. Its parent company rebranded to Limitless, pivoted to a wearable, and was acquired by Meta in an announcement dated December 5, 2025; screen and audio capture in the Mac app was disabled on December 19, 2025, and EU and UK users had until that same date to export their data. It is listed here so you do not spend an afternoon chasing it — and as a reminder that a record living on your own disk survives a vendor's exit better than one living in an account.

常见问题解答

What is the best Microsoft Recall alternative?

For most people, LUCI — it runs on any modern Mac or Windows machine with no Copilot+ requirement, captures meetings as well as your screen, and keeps the understanding on your device. OpenRecall is the better pick if you want a free, auditable, open-source clone of Recall's exact behaviour, and Screenpipe if you need Linux or a continuous capture pipeline to build on.

Is there a Recall alternative for Windows 10?

Yes, and this is a common reason to look. Recall requires Windows 11 24H2 or later on a Copilot+ PC, so Windows 10 is out entirely. OpenRecall runs on ordinary Windows machines and is free, and Screenpipe supports Windows without special hardware. LUCI runs on Windows and Mac and uses an NPU or GPU when one is available rather than requiring one — check each tool's own minimum Windows version before installing.

Can I get Recall without a Copilot+ PC?

Not Recall itself. Microsoft's documented minimum is a Secured-core Copilot+ PC with a 40-TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, 8 logical processors, and 256 GB of storage, plus BitLocker and a biometric Windows Hello enrolment — there is no software route around it. What you can get is the capability: LUCI, OpenRecall, and Screenpipe all deliver searchable screen history on hardware you already own, and LUCI and Screenpipe add the audio Recall does not record.

Is Microsoft Recall safe to use?

Its rebuilt architecture is a real improvement on the 2024 launch: opt-in, gated behind Windows Hello, with snapshots encrypted using keys held in a VBS enclave and analyzed on the device. The open questions are practical rather than architectural. Hands-on testing at Tom's Hardware, retested by The Register in August 2025, found the sensitive-information filter still saving card and Social Security numbers; Signal, Brave, and AdGuard block Recall from capturing their windows; and Microsoft removes it by default on managed commercial and education devices. Judge it against what you would actually be capturing.

Is there a Microsoft Recall alternative for Mac?

Recall is Windows-only and Microsoft has never shipped a Mac version. LUCI runs natively on macOS and Windows and adds meeting capture, OpenRecall and Screenpipe both support macOS, and Codex Chronicle is macOS-only but sends screenshots to OpenAI for processing. Rewind used to be the Mac answer, but its app stopped capturing on December 19, 2025.
