Best Limitless Alternatives in 2026

Meta acquired Limitless in December 2025, Pendant sales stopped the same day, and the Rewind desktop app stopped capturing two weeks later. Eight replacements compared — wearables and software — on who owns the company, where your conversations are processed, and what they actually cost.

What happened to Limitless — and which half you need to replace

Limitless sold two things. One was the Pendant: a $99–$199 clip-on wearable that recorded in-person conversations and built a searchable lifelog. The other was software — the company began life as Rewind, a Mac app that captured your screen and let you scroll back through your own work, and rebranded the parent entity to Limitless on the way to the wearable.

Both ended on the same announcement. Per 9to5Mac and other reporting from December 5, 2025, Meta acquired Limitless, Pendant sales to new customers stopped that day, and service was discontinued immediately in Brazil, China, the EU, Israel, South Korea, Turkey, and the UK — users in those regions had until December 19 to export transcripts before account deletion. On December 19, 2025, an update disabled all screen and audio capture in the Rewind Mac app. Existing Pendant owners were promised support for at least a year and had the Unlimited Plan made free, which is a grace period rather than a roadmap.

So the useful first question is not "what is the closest thing to a Pendant" but "which half did I use". If the value was capturing hallway conversations and walk-and-talks away from a computer, you need hardware. If it was remembering meetings, calls, and what you were working on, that is a software problem and you already own the device. The table below keeps the two apart so you can replace the part you actually miss.

02 — 评判标准

How to judge a Limitless replacement

Four questions decide this. The Pendant shutdown is a reminder that only one of them is about features.

Q1

Hardware or software?

A wearable captures conversations when your laptop is closed — genuinely useful for in-person meetings and hallway chats. It also means a device to buy, charge nightly, remember to wear, and eventually replace, plus an LED announcing that you are recording. Software on the Mac or PC you already own has none of that overhead but covers meetings, calls, and screen work rather than every conversation of your day. Most Pendant owners were buying meeting recall, not a necklace.

Q2

Who owns the company?

This is the question the Pendant shutdown was actually about. Limitless was acquirable, and Meta acquired it. Bee, the other well-known always-on pendant, was acquired by Amazon (announced July 22, 2025). When you wear something that records what your clients, colleagues, and family say, the acquirer inherits the relationship. Check ownership before you buy, not after.

Q3

Where are conversations processed?

The Pendant sent audio to a vendor cloud, which is why an ownership change mattered so much and why the service could be switched off region by region. A tool that transcribes and understands on your own device keeps working when the vendor does not, and the record stays on a disk you control. There is a falsifiable test: turn off Wi-Fi and see whether capture and search still work.

Q4

Can you get your history out — and can your tools reach it?

Two things separate an archive from a memory. The first is export: Limitless users in discontinued regions had two weeks to pull their transcripts, and raw device audio was never portable. The second is access — in 2026 the question is whether Claude, Cursor, or Codex can pull the context themselves instead of you searching an app and pasting the result.

Actively developed and shipping; your memory lives on your own disk, so no acquisition can switch it off region by region

LUCI replaces what most people actually used the Pendant for — remembering meetings, calls, and decisions — using the computer you already work on. It captures Zoom, Meet, Teams, Webex, and in-room conversations without sending a bot into the call, and it captures the screen work you opt into, so "what did we agree on" and "what was in that document" are both answerable. Capture, on-device understanding, and storage all happen locally and encrypted at rest, which means search still works with Wi-Fi off.

The trade is honest: there is no wearable, so a conversation that happens away from your machine is not captured. What you get instead is no hardware to charge or replace, no LED, no per-region service to be switched off — and Agent Bridge, which lets Claude, Cursor, and Codex query your memory directly. LUCI connects itself, with nothing to set up.

Independent and actively shipping a full lineup as of September 2026; transcripts live in Plaud’s cloud

Plaud is the leading independent hardware option and the most direct answer to "I still want something I clip on". Its lineup on plaud.ai as of September 2026 is the Note at $159, NotePin at $159, NotePin S at $179, and Note Pro at $189, with a Plaud One in pre-order. Transcription quality is strong across a long list of languages.

Two differences from the Pendant matter. Plaud is intentional rather than always-on — you tap to record a specific meeting, lecture, or interview — which sidesteps much of the consent friction. And the AI features sit behind a subscription on top of the hardware: a free Starter tier covers 300 transcription minutes a month, with Pro at $17.99/mo ($99.99/yr) and Unlimited at $29.99/mo ($239.99/yr). Processing is cloud-based, so the ownership question applies here too.

Hardware, firmware, and app are open source (BasedHardware/omi on GitHub), so the software outlives the company — but omi.me showed the device as pre-order and out of stock when checked on 2026-09-06

Omi is the answer to the specific fear the Pendant shutdown created. The hardware, firmware, and companion app are all published on GitHub, and there is a community plugin ecosystem on top. If the company disappears, the code does not, which is a materially different bet from a closed wearable tied to one cloud account.

It is also the most DIY option here. You are expected to be comfortable with a developer-flavoured setup, and the checkout on omi.me showed pre-order and out of stock when we checked on 2026-09-06 — verify availability before planning a migration around it.

Acquired by Amazon (announced July 22, 2025, per TechCrunch); still shipping and adding features through 2026

Bee is the cheapest always-on capture in this list at around $49.99, and unlike the Pendant it is still being developed — new features shipped to existing hardware during 2026, and the subscription was waived, so the device price is the whole cost.

The catch is exactly the one that sent you here. Bee was acquired by Amazon in an acquisition announced on July 22, 2025, so a wearable that hears everything you say now belongs to another very large platform company. If you are replacing Limitless because Meta bought it, swapping to the pendant Amazon bought does not solve the problem — it renames it.

Independent and actively marketing to displaced Limitless users as of September 2026

Hedy has the widest device coverage here — iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, Android, Apple Watch, and web — which makes it a reasonable landing spot if your meetings are split across a phone and a laptop. Its distinguishing feature is live coaching: it surfaces questions and follow-ups during the conversation rather than only summarising afterwards.

Read the architecture claim carefully before treating it as a local tool. Hedy markets privacy-first on-device processing alongside cloud sync across devices, which is a hybrid rather than a fully local design. Pricing on hedy.ai as of September 2026: a free tier capped at five hours a month, Pro at $12.99/mo or $99.99/yr, and a $299 lifetime option.

If what you miss is the Pendant’s always-on ambient capture rather than the hardware itself, TwinMind is the closest software equivalent: mobile-first, designed to listen through a day of in-person conversation, with speaker identification on paid tiers.

It reproduces the Pendant’s trade-offs as well as its strengths. The flagship Ear-3 model is cloud-based, so audio leaves the device, and always-on listening carries the same consent friction a wearable does — minus the visible LED that at least told people it was on. Desktop coverage is thin: the Windows app is waitlist only.

Granola

If your honest usage was "what did we decide on that call", a dedicated notetaker beats a wearable. Granola is the most polished of them — clean notes, good templates — and it captures without sending a bot into the meeting.

Know what you are trading. Per Granola’s own documentation, audio is passed to a cloud transcription provider and transcripts are stored on US-hosted AWS, non-Enterprise accounts train on anonymized data unless you opt out, and the desktop app has no live speaker diarization — speech is labelled "Me" or "Them". It also only covers meetings on your computer, so in-person conversations and screen work are out of scope.

Acquired by Meta, announced December 5, 2025. Pendant sales stopped; existing owners supported for at least a year with the Unlimited Plan made free; service discontinued in Brazil, China, the EU, Israel, South Korea, Turkey, and the UK

For completeness, and because existing owners are the people reading this: the Pendant still works for now. Meta committed to supporting existing customers for at least a year from the December 2025 announcement and made the Unlimited Plan free, so there is no subscription to cancel and no urgent hardware failure.

What there is not is a roadmap. New Pendants are not sold, the Rewind desktop app stopped capturing on December 19, 2025, and service was discontinued outright in seven markets. Treat the remaining window as time to export your transcripts and pick a successor, not as a reprieve.

常见问题解答

Is the Limitless Pendant really discontinued?

Yes. Meta announced the acquisition of Limitless on December 5, 2025, and sales of the Pendant to new customers stopped the same day. Existing owners were told they would be supported for at least a year and had the Unlimited Plan made free. Service was discontinued outright in Brazil, China, the EU, Israel, South Korea, Turkey, and the UK, where users had until December 19, 2025 to export transcripts before account deletion. No new Pendant hardware has been announced since.

What is the best Limitless AI alternative in 2026?

It depends which half you used. For meeting and decision recall — what most Pendant owners actually relied on — LUCI is the closest actively shipping option on Mac and Windows, and it keeps capture, understanding, and storage on your own device. If you specifically want a wearable, Plaud is the leading independent hardware alternative, and Omi is the open-source one. If your meetings are all on a screen and you want polish over privacy, Granola.

What is the best AI pendant in 2026?

Three are worth considering, and they are different bets. Plaud (from $159, plus a subscription for the AI features) is the most mature independent hardware, and it is tap-to-record rather than always-on. Bee is the cheapest at around $49.99 with the subscription waived, but it is owned by Amazon. Omi is the open-source option at around $89 — hardware, firmware, and app are all on GitHub — though it showed as pre-order and out of stock when we checked on 2026-09-06. If you only want the pendant for meetings, software on the computer you already own does that job with no device to charge.

Is there a Limitless alternative not owned by Big Tech?

Yes. LUCI, Plaud, Omi, Hedy, TwinMind, and Granola are all independent as of September 2026. The two to watch out for are Bee, acquired by Amazon in an acquisition announced July 22, 2025, and Limitless itself, now part of Meta. If independence is the point, also ask where the audio is processed — an independent vendor with a cloud is still one acquisition away from the same situation, whereas a record stored and processed on your own device does not change hands.

Can I export my Limitless lifelog and move it somewhere else?

Text transcripts, yes — Limitless provided data export, and users in the discontinued regions were given until December 19, 2025 to use it. Raw Pendant audio is generally not portable. Export what you can while your access lasts: LUCI can import exported transcripts as searchable memory, and most other tools accept plain text or documents. Either way the practical move is to start building a new record now rather than after support ends.
